The Coalition for a Better Old Wheatland Road is growing group of daily users fed up with the condition of OWR and determined to get the road paved immediately and improved over time. Tired of delays and excuses, the Coalition is organized, committed, funded, and with various fields of expertise among its members, will pursue all courses of action with focused vigor to achieve its goals in a respectful and friendly manner.
The dust is unhealthy and has caused property damage to homes and cars (dust from gravel roads can contain silica, a substance that, when inhaled, can lead to health issues such as respiratory problems and lung disease. Moreover, the dust can reduce visibility on the roads, leading to potential accidents.
It’s impossible for VDOT to keep up with due to the increase in traffic over the last 5 years. It would have to be graded every two weeks which is not logistically or financially viable. VDOT themselves recommend paving as site it as one of the TOP 5 WORST roads in Loudoun County. Additionally, VDOT has said the Loudoun County school bus drivers are also complaining about the road.
The potholes, rocks, and grade all damage cars.
There should be no additional cut through traffic as 2/3rds of the gravel road will remain, and it is not a good cut through anyway.
The horses from neighboring farms seem to prefer the paved roads of Old Wheatland Estates than the gravel road as we see them out on them all the time in the communities and not on Old Wheatland Road.
While everyone should have an opportunity to be heard, significant weigh should be given to those who live off the road and must deal with it on a daily basis.
Improvement/surfacing/paving is ALREALY largely paid for (close to $700K from the original land developer set aside and ready for Loudoun to use specifically for this paving effort)
